Next attempt coming up

Not sure whether I measured incorrectly, or my weight has changed in the interim. Got my first bodice done, and needed to do some alterations. Front neck is surprisingly high for some reason, need the typical for me sway back, and bicep alterations. I usually do my sway back adjustment at my waist, so figured I was okay there. Not. From the pictures, it appears I am getting a much more forward neck than I've ever had before, and slightly rounded shoulders which I also didn't have before. Think it's time to start doing pushups every day. :P}

First set of pics...

So the next iteration is on the drawing board. Dropped the front neckline and took 1/4" out of the shoulder at the neck, tapering to nothing at the shoulder. Did a 1" sway back adjustment about mid lower back, above the dart, but below the arms. I also added 3/8" to the back side seam because that looks a little tight. Increased the bicep by 1" ~ even though it looks okay, it feels a little tight. After the next draft I will look and see if I need to cut the rear armscye in a little from the shoulder all the way down.

I have the draft redone and the back has the darts sewn. The front is cut out but not marked yet. Too bad I have to work today. I'll try to be really focused and get work done early so I can move on to my second muslin and see how that works. I'm quite encouraged with this as it's the best "first" muslin I've ever come out with. Can't wait to have it fitted well and get to making clothing!

More later!

  1. Just a few more tweaks and this will be completed - too bad about having to work, its such an inconvenience in a sewers daily life (but it does pay for more fabric!!!)

  2. I am so impressed with thsoe who are doing the Sure Fit program. I have 4 classes going now so I will wait to pick up on this for pants fitting. In the meantime, I will wear my standard Butterick pattern. :-) I read through some recent blog posts here and see that you husband had a heart attack. I am glad he is recovering from surgery and learning to take better care.

    1. Thanks so much Mary. I know you've been through some health issues with your hubby too. Hope all is well.

      We're trying to learn new habits, but in our mid 60's it's an uphill battle. Especially because I do work too much, and then don't want to cook, but I need that work to maintain my fabric addiction for sure!

  3. Hi again, Lynda. I missed the post(s) about your DH. I hope he's on the mend. Ah, yes, work, it does get in the way. But guess what? I retired a year ago and I am honestly almost as busy as when I was working! I'm just doing things I want to do. I think that Glenda feels that solid light color shows folds and wrinkles even better than gingham, which is what I had previously used. Glenda might have a video about identifying and measuring your shoulder line. That was one thing that I had never figured out before. It looks like your shoulder/neck intersection is a little more forward than it needs to be. It might be somethîng you can figure out on your own, or with Glenda's help via email, or in your class. So many wonderful ways to learn! M iPad is going into German spelling, so ill cut this short. Keep it going, Lynda, you're going to look back and say, I did it! 😊

    1. Thanks for the encouragement Sandra! I know I can work this out. A girlfriend and I who have taken lots of classes together including flat pattern will be going up to the retreat. I hope I have the "blueprints" done when we get there so I can get into the jackets and other items. Glenda has already commented, and I think I've got it MOSTLY figured out. Today I should finish the second muslin if the heat doesn't get me first! Unforuntately tomorrow is back to work!
